The International Betta Congress (IBC) is
pleased to solicit applications for an
IBC Student Research Fellowship from
graduate and undergraduate students using
members of the genus Betta as experimental
organisms in original thesis research.
Grants are available for sums of up to a maximum
of $1,000 US per calendar year. In the case of a
Ph.D. candidate, the award can be renewed twice
(for a total of 3 years of award), based on
satisfactory completion of an annual report. A
final report is required and IBC support must be
acknowledged in any publication emanating from
the research. IBC Student Research Fellows will
be invited to report on their findings in the
IBC journal Flare.
All aspects of scientific research on Betta will
be considered, although preference will be given
to those proposals addressing topics of interest
to the IBC membership. Examples include:
- Generation and maintenance of isogenic
and congenic lines
- Characterization of the chromatophores
of Betta
- Biochemical characterization of Betta
pigments
- Gene mapping
- Use of zebrafish genomic resources to
isolate genes of interest in Betta
- Molecular phylogeny of Betta
- Betta conservation
- Characterization of the agent(s)
responsible for fin rot
- Development of the new methods of
control of Oodinium (velvet).
Interested students should submit a
proposal of no longer than 5 pages in
length, detailing background, objectives,
methodology, budget and budget
justification. Two letters of support are
required one of which must be from the
student's advisor/supervisor.
Awards are announced annually on July 1.
Proposals, which will be reviewed by members
of the IBC Research and Grants Committee,
